National Catholic Youth Conference

Nineteen MCA students traveled to Kansas City, Missouri, last month to attend the National Catholic Youth Conference. The three-day conference drew more than 24,000 young people from across the country to the Kansas City Sprint Center and Convention Center for a celebration of their Catholic Faith.

From intimate workshops to massive worship services, the conference provided students many opportunities to interact with fellow young Catholics.

Senior Ashley Ledet was overwhelmed by the power of 24,000 young adults singing with one voice in worship while all moving together with synchronized hand motions. "The energy and spirit was so refreshing," said Ledet. "It made me proud to be a Catholic and reminded me of God's ever-faithful presence in our lives."

The highlight for senior Julie Welcker wasn't so much one particular moment, but rather seeing thousands of teens throughout the conference so open and willing to share their faith. "It was truly the most amazing experience of my life and so inspiring to see that many people are so in love with God and the Catholic faith," said Welcker.

Other members of the MCA delegation had their own favorite memories. Seniors Claire and Katie Salzer agreed that their favorite part of the trip was the opening mass led by our own Archbishop Aymond, who accompanied the 200-member New Orleans delegation for the entire trip. For sophomore Theresa Massony, it was the overall experience of meeting and interacting with new people. Freshman Laurel Giacone, meanwhile, felt the presence of Christ during the Eucharistic procession of more 20,000 people from the Sprint Center to the Convention Center. Sophomore Sarah Beth Selph enjoyed attending daily workshops and meeting people like Christian singer/songwriter John Angotti and keynote speakers Jason and Crystalina Evert.

The next NCYC is scheduled for November of 2011 in Indianapolis, Indiana.
