Student Council Convention

Students from Mount Carmel Academy recently attended the La. Association of Student Councils Convention at Captain Shreve High School in Shreveport.  Mount Carmel's Executive Board and four juniors attended the event, accompanied by Mrs. Sue Buras and Mr. Dave Pooley.  Mount Carmel received many awards at the convention, including the Outstanding Student Council Week Award, the Silver Award for Outstanding Student Council, and the Charity Award for donating $1000 to Shriner's Hospital.  Mrs. Sue Buras, director of Student Activities, also received a very special honor.  Mrs. Buras was inducted into the La. Association of Student Councils Hall of Fame in recognition of over 25 years of service to Mount Carmel Academy.  We are proud of you!

Close Up

Twenty-seven Mount Carmel Academy juniors and seniors recently enjoyed a week of behind-the-scenes access to the halls of power in Washington, D.C., thanks to the Close Up program. During their stay, MCA's delegation engaged in spirited issues debates with students from around the country, enjoyed private meetings with U.S. Senators Mary Landrieu and David Vitter and toured the White House, Capitol, and Library of Congress. The wonderful week was capped off when juniors Olivia Bailey and Marion Boreros were selected by their peers to address the Farewell Banquet, the first time MCA students have earned that honor.

Who Dat!
Mount Carmel Academy National Art Honor Society students entered an art contest held by the Archdiocese Nutrition Department to raise health awareness.  Students were asked to create a piece of sculpture out of milk containers and the results were amazing.  Riley Holahan, who won third place, received an autographed miniature football helmet from Saints player, Marques Colston.  Mrs. Sarah Kennedy is very proud of her students and the fantastic job that they did.

Surprise

Aryelle Stafford, Mount Carmel Senior, is surprised by the Carnival Cruise staff with a congratulatory cake and special "Carnival Hat" on her recent cruise to Mexico.  Aryelle won the cruise as the Overall State Winner (Spanish) when she represented Mount Carmel Academy in the recent Foreign Language Festival.

Throw me something, mister

Beads aren't the only thing you can catch at your favorite parades this Mardi Gras season.  You can also see the Carmelettes, Rhythm Dance Team, and the Cheerleaders in various Metairie and Mid City parades.  Friday night, all three groups marched in Excalibur.  Check the school calendar for additional parade appearances.

Need a Hand

A great resource available to students is the tutoring lab.  During independent study, there's a Math, Science and an English lab available to help students with perplexing problems or mangled paragraphs.  Each lab is staffed by NHS students and a faculty member.  It's a great place to get things sorted out.

Cub Cheer

Congratulations to the Competition Cheerleaders who placed first in the All girls, Superlarge Varsity cheer division on Sunday, January 24th.  Fueled with excitement for the Saints, the team delivered a flawless routine!  This year the team will attend Nationals in Orlando, Florida on February 27th.

Let the Games Begin

With the Vancouver Winter Olympics upon us, the Physical Education Classes are participating this semester in the 2010 Mount Carmel Academy Olympic Winter Games.  The students have created their country's name, designed their flag, and collaborated with each other to develop a motto and determine events each team member will participate in during the Olympics.  Best of luck to everyone!

Show Forgiveness, Speak for Justice

The senior class recently enjoyed the opportunity of visiting an Islamic mosque.  The girls were the guests of Imam Omar Suleiman of the Masjid Abu Bakr Al-Siddique Mosque who spoke to the seniors about his role as an Imam, his Muslim faith and the commonalities they share with Christianity.  It was a unique experience for our girls in that they were able to interact directly with the Imam and also with Mrs. Khan - one of our own faculty members - through whom the field trip was made possible.  Our girls were treated to the full Arabic experience in that they not only learned about Islam and Christianity from the Muslim perspective, but also shared in the custom of 'veiling' themselves and removing their shoes before entering the mosque.  All in all it was a memorable and interactive 'religion' class.

At Your Service

Among the many activities during National French Week, the French National Honor Society held a French Waiter Relay Race.  Participants dressed the part through various stages and delivered refreshments at the finish line.

Making the Grade

New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees recently honored Mount Carmel Academy as one of seven winners for the 2008-2009 "Making the Grade" initiative sponsored by OMNI Bank.  The nationally recognized program highlights successful education projects and curricula in elementary, high schools and special schools.  Each winner received a $2,000 check from the Brees Dream Foundation, along with an award from OMNI.  The seven winners were chosen by school system superintendents from among 200 entries.

Teen Read Week

In celebration of American Library Association's Teen Read Week, Mount Carmel Academy's Book Club and Science Fiction/Fantasy Club recently teamed up with the library for a week of early morning discussions.  The theme for Teen Read Week was "Read Beyond Reality."  Faculty and students came together over brown bag breakfasts to discuss their favorite science fiction and fantasy literature.
